Laser removal of sebaceous gland hyperplasia

Updated: Aug 16

A modern solution for smooth and healthy skin — at Dr. Uskov's Clinic.

Laser removal of sebaceous gland hyperplasia on the forehead

Sebaceous gland hyperplasia is a benign skin condition that occurs due to an enlargement of the sebaceous glands. It most often appears as small dome-shaped nodules of flesh-colored or yellowish hue with a central depression. These formations are primarily located on the face — on the forehead, nose, cheeks, and temples.

Although sebaceous hyperplasia does not pose a health risk, it is often considered cosmetically undesirable by patients, especially in cases of multiple lesions.

At the clinic of international expert Dr. Uskov, precise and safe removal of sebaceous gland hyperplasia is performed using advanced medical-grade lasers, with minimal risk of complications and rapid recovery.

Why is this important?

Sebaceous hyperplasia occurs primarily in adults, especially:

  • after the age of 40–45;

  • in patients with oily skin;

  • in individuals who have been taking steroids or immunomodulators for a long time;

  • more often in men than in women.

Patients often mistakenly take them for milia, acne, warts, or even basal cell carcinoma. Therefore, professional diagnosis and removal are the key to accurate and safe treatment.

Why remove sebaceous hyperplasia?

  • Aesthetics: The formations are noticeable, especially in side lighting.

  • Psychological comfort: Particularly when multiple nodules appear on the face.

  • Prevention of inflammation: Can occur if the lesions are injured or if there are attempts at self-removal.

  • Diagnosis: In rare cases, removal is necessary to rule out a malignant process (e.g., basal cell carcinoma).

Why is laser removal optimal?

Laser removal provides:

  • Precise targeting of pathological tissue while practically sparing healthy skin.

  • Instant coagulation of blood vessels — no bleeding.

  • Minimal risk of scarring and hyperpigmentation.

  • Rapid skin recovery without stitches or dressings.

  • Controlled depth and area of impact — especially important for multiple lesions.

How is treatment carried out at Dr. Uskov’s Clinic?

1. In-person consultation and diagnosis

During the appointment, the doctor:

  • Conducts a visual and instrumental examination.

  • Uses digital dermatoscopy if necessary.

  • Orders additional tests or a biopsy if required (in cases of atypical forms or suspicion of basal cell carcinoma).

After diagnosis, an individualized removal protocol is developed, taking into account the number, depth, and location of the lesions.

2. Laser removal

  • Technologies used: Ablative CO₂ or Er:YAG lasers, depending on the indication.

  • Anesthesia: Not required or applied locally (depending on skin sensitivity).

  • Procedure duration: 5 to 15 minutes.

In most cases, a single procedure is sufficient; rarely, a second session is needed after 8–12 weeks.

Post-procedure recovery

After the procedure:

  • Mild swelling, redness, and the formation of tiny crusts may appear in the treated area.

  • Immediate recovery usually takes 5–8 days.

  • Recommendations:

    • Do not remove the crusts — they will fall off naturally.

    • Avoid applying makeup to the treated area until fully healed.

    • Avoid sun exposure and use SPF 50+ for at least 4 weeks.

    • Apply soothing creams prescribed by the doctor. More precise, individualized recommendations are given during the in-person consultation.

What affects the results?

  • Number and size of the hyperplasia formations

  • Age and condition of the skin

  • Location (especially in sensitive areas such as the eyelids or nose)

  • Adherence to post-procedure care instructions

  • Skin type (Fitzpatrick phototype)
