The term “venous lake” was first proposed in 1956 by American researchers William Bennett Bean and John Walsh. They described these lesions as painless vascular dilations that occur most often on the lips in people over 40.

According to a review published in the MDPI journal in 2022, removal of capillary angiomas and venous lakes with lasers of different wavelengths achieves more than 95 percent clinical success, with no risk of scarring and excellent cosmetic outcomes.
